Nguyễn Tiến Chung

Nguyễn Tiến Chung showed a gift for painting from early childhood and passed the entrance exam for the Indochina School of Fine Arts in 1936. He was in the same year as Hoàng Tích Chù, Nguyễn Văn Tỵ and Bùi Trang Chước (1936 – 1941). As one of the most brilliant students in his class, he became one of the country’s masters in silk painting and also enjoyed working in other media (oil, lacquer, woodcuts, Indian ink, etc.) He drew inspiration from pastoral subjects and landscapes, such as villages with brown and gold fields, landscapes with tranquil pagodas or lively scenes with young romantic girls… His works with their simple style reflect the Oriental state of mind and illustrate the deep communion between people and the Vietnamese countryside. Nguyễn Tiến Chung is unanimously recognised for the high quality of his artistic compositions.
